A dozy British backpacker sparked a huge police hunt in Australia after leaving his belongings at a notorious suicide spot - while he partied the night away with a couple of girls.

Joe Stuttle, 19, left his bike and a bag containing his passport chained to a fence during a gap year tour of Tasmania.

The student then went to a nearby town to watch the Christmas lights get switched on. There he met two girls and went drinking with them before they invited him back to their home last Friday.

http://splendyrblogs.net/But when he returned to Launceston Gorge the next day, Joe was shocked to discover his bike missing and dozens of police officers combing the area.

It was only as he told one of them his biked had been taken, that he realised they were actually looking for him. Joe said yesterday: When I came back in the morning, I found my bike stolen.

Thankfully there were 30 officers in hiking gear. I told them, Im glad youre here - someone has stolen my bike.

They stared at me for a while before getting the police chief - he had just issued a report to the TV crews about their concern for my safety and how they were about to begin a search.

But when I sauntered back like an idiot, they didnt seem to mind. They were just happy I was safe. It really is a reflection of the fantastic work of Tasmanian police. They even called my parents. I am so, so sorry Mum.

Parents Lorraine and Chris, from Billingborough, Lincs, were on holiday when the alarm was raised.

Relieved Chris said: Anyone who knows Joe will not be in the least bit surprised by this story - we certainly werent.
